Dear Friend,

I have to tell you a secret: self care doesn't have to mean booking a spa day and carving out hours you really don't have. It also doesn't mean a fancy getaway, or an entire day off watching TV and ordering take out. (however, I sure wouldn't say no to those either!) We can take self care every day, multiple times a day, in just moments of time.

I'm writing this post to share with you something I've been learning and relishing: everyday self care is about making small, intentional choices that can help you pause, and come back to yourself. It's small rituals, moments, and reminders that keep you grounded. Because remember: you're worth caring for too!

This post is meant to inspire you with some simple, everyday practices to refresh your mind, reset your energy and recharge your spirt so you can show up as your best self in the middle of life's beautiful, overwhelming and magical chaos.

Self care doesn't have to be about doing more: it's about being present with yourself.

Take A Few Moments to Stretch

Now don't overthink this. You can truly make a difference by just taking a couple of moments to move your body! I'm going to make it easy: your spine has four principal movements that are essential for every day life:

  • Flexion - bending forward (picking up something off the ground, rounding back)

  • Extension - bending backwards (looking up at something high, arching back)

  • Lateral Flexion - bending side to side (reaching down or over one side of the body)

  • Rotation - twisting left or right (turning to the kid, pet, or other object in the backseat of the car)

I have a quick and simple routine you can do anytime, download the PDF here:

I recommend doing it standing, but you can absolutely stretch while seated. You can also get your kids involved - it's a great way for them to reset as well. Or, feel free to lock yourself in the bathroom and do them on your own. 😏

Light A Candle

You know the saying "Stop and Smell the Roses" ? Well I want you to stop and smell the candle. Grab your favorite candle. Before you even light it stop and take a big inhale, and big exhale. Take notice how the scent makes you feel, does it remind you of anything; a person, a place, a moment in time? Now, after it's been lit I want you to stop and take at least one big, deep, inhale and exhale every time you catch a whiff or a glimpse of the candle.

My personal favorite candle is this one from Calyan Candle Co. Not only do their candles smell amazing and burn evenly for HOURS, they are also helping "bring light to a dark world', by donating part of their revenue to nonprofts dedicated to ending human trafficking. Doing something for myself that also helps others that desperately need it....that's some self care that feels amazing in numerous ways.

Stop Walking Around Your House in Bare Feet

(but don't wear your outside shoes inside, that's gross)

Now this one is super bittersweet for me. I LOVE being barefoot. However, after 30+ years of dancing, instructing, AND two pregnancies my feet have acquired a little condition called Plantar Fasciitis. If you know what it is, I am so sorry for you. It's no fun.

Anyways, with that being said. Find yourself super comfy house shoes to slide on and off when you're in your home. Your feet and lower legs are overworked and underpaid to the max, so try to give them some special care when you can.

I live in these KuaiLu slippers around my house, I gave the hubby these KuaiLu recovery sandals and loves them as well! They are like walking on what I imagine a cloud would be like to walk on, if a cloud was dense and not air. 😂

Wash Your Face

I imagine you wash your face at least once a day, right? I personally wash mine twice - once in the morning and once in the evening. When you wash your face do you just slap on the soap, rub it around for a few seconds and then rinse it off? That's how I used to do it, with Bath & Body Works foaming hand soap, and maybe some body lotion if it was handy. 😂

As I've gotten older I've learned the skin on my face needs some extra TLC. Nowadays I treat my face washing like a fancy treatment at the spa. I'm not kidding. I spend at least 30 seconds massaging the cleanser on my face, but I can easily spend 5 minutes or more washing my face.

Let me tell you, it makes a difference when you use your fingers to massage the cleanser in circular motions around your face, spending at least 10 seconds in each area. It can be so relaxing, and my skin looks and feels much happier! Not only that, there's something about taking extra time to wash your face at the end of a long day that just feels so special. I repeat the same patterns with all products I use on my face, including sunscreen. (PLEASE do not skip the sunscreen, skin cancer removal surgery is not fun. I know from experience.)

My favorite wash for the daytime is Philosophy's One Step Facial Cleanser.

I also absolutely love Skin 1004 products and at night I've been using their Centella line. They have a really cool Centella Travel Kit that introduces you to their products without having to buy a full size.

Delete Social Media

This is my absolute favorite every day self care practice. I deleted all social media apps from my phone for about 2 years and it was a relief. I am back on the socials (for now), while I get The Della Diary established. But I do have a new relationship with it since taking a break, and I have confidence I can navigate being on social media again without it becoming the obsession it once was. I know so many of you can relate. So why not do something about it?

If deleting social media sounds impossible to you, try this instead: Set a timer, 5,10,15 minutes, whatever you want. Put your phone somewhere out of reach, out of sight and on do not disturb for that entire length of time. Try to do this every day, maybe even increasing the amount of time each day. Perhaps you spend that time reading a book, writing in a diary, or even just drinking your morning cup of coffee without scrolling. Taking a purposeful moment without any distractions, especially those from social media, can really make a difference in taking care of yourself.

Write in a Diary

Starting a diary doesn't have to be a daunting task, you know why? Because there are zero rules to writing in a diary! You can take 2 minutes to jot down ANYTHING! An emotion you're experiencing that day, a joke your kid told you that was actually funny, a simple "I'm doing a great job today" message to yourself, a reminder that it's okay to not always be okay.....anything at all. If you want to write one sentence, cool. An entire page, cool. A 10 page report on your day, cool. I mean it! There can be something very soothing about putting a pen (or lets be real, a broken crayon or half dried up marker is usually what's quickly found in my house), to paper and just seeing what flows out.

If you really don't know where to start, or if you enjoy some prompts to your writing, I've created a 14 Day Morning Diary for Busy Humans. It is now available for purchase on Etsy!

These 6 tips are things I do for myself consistently, and they really, truly help me find calm throughout the chaos that seems to be a regular in my life.

My invitation to you: pick one, and do it. Today! Whatever you choose to do will be perfect, and however you choose to do it will be perfect. Because the fact that you chose something for YOU, is already special. I'm proud of you.

Remember: self-care isn’t always about carving out more time or adding more to your plate. It’s about noticing the little ways you can care for and be present with YOU.

Love,

Della
