It's the best time of the year, Diary and friends!
Last week, the three year old and I were walking down our street looking at our neighbor's Halloween decorations. We arrived back home to find the sweetest surprise waiting on the porch: a little bucket stuffed with Halloween goodies! There was candy, some tattoos, sticker & crafts for the kids, even some scrunchies and a little Halloween advent calendar. Tucked inside was a note that read: “You’ve Been Boo’ed!”
If you’ve never been boo’ed before, let me tell you, it felt like a mix of Halloween magic and neighborly love all rolled into one. It instantly made my whole week brighter. The three year old was giddy with excitement and immediately tore into the treats, while I stood there smiling wondering which neighbor had snuck up to our doorstep without us noticing.
We facetimed the husband and the 5 year old since they were already on their way to school to show them too, it was such a fun moment for us all. It made me feel grateful to live in a community where people go out of their way to spread joy to a stranger. Someone turned something as small as some trinkets and treats into something so surprising, and sweet. It was an act of kindness that was unexpected and truly meant a lot!
Not only did it make me, and my family, feel the love from receiving an unexpected gift, we also got to feel the love by giving an unexpected gift too! The girls and I had a blast putting together three baskets of our own to surprise neighbors. We chose to do three because I wanted to do one for my elderly neighbors, and I wanted the girls to each pick their own house to "Boo".
How You Can Start It Too
If your neighborhood hasn’t started yet, you can be the one to kick it off! Here’s how:
1. Fill a basket or bag with small Halloween treats. Shop or browse my You've Been Boo'ed List for some ideas for your own basket!
2. Print out the “You’ve Been Boo’ed” poem with instructions.
(I've created one you can print below!)
3. Sneak up to a friend or neighbor’s house, leave it at the door, ring the bell (or don’t!) and run away.
4. Watch the fun spread!
It’s such a sweet way to bring people together and add a little extra sparkle to spooky season. I can’t wait to see how far the “boo” travels this year!
So if you see a “We’ve Been Boo’ed” sign pop up on a neighbor's door… watch out!
The ghostly fun might just be coming for you next. 👻✨
Happy Halloween Season!
Love,
Della
